Health Concerns In Toy Breeds

Patella Luxation-Knees

Patella Luxation is common in ALL toy breeds. The condition affects primarily small toy breeds. Patella Luxation can be misdiagnosed and may be a growing phase for a puppy under the age of 1 year. It is almost impossible to diagnose Patella Luxation in a very young puppy that is still growing, they bones and joints are very flexible during this time.   OFA only test dogs that are over 1 year old.

Coccidia and Giardi

often timed young puppies experience a large amount of stress when moving to their new home. The first sign of stress is a loose stool, possibly Mucousy or even with a small amount of blood. This is what is diagnosed as Coccidiosis Are Giardi. which required some medication and should resolve with these medications. Not the breeders fault sometimes it just happen.

Molera

Molera (open fontanel) is seen in many Toy Breeds. Most Chihuahuas (80 to 90 percent) have a molera or soft spot on the top of their head similiar to a human baby.

Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) you may find in small breeds as well as large breeds. The puppy may have an unusually large head for his size caused by swelling. Other signs of this condition are frequent falling, learning problems, seizures, alot of white showing in their eyes, an unsteady gait and east-west eyes.  A puppy with a mild case may never show any signs and can live a perfectly normal life. In some cases it can be treated with medications. Hydrocephalus can also occur due to a fall or trama to the head.
